Turtle Island - Sabah, Malaysia Turtle Island is located off the coast of Sabah, out from Sandakan. It is very close to the border with the Phillipines. There are three islands in the turtle preserve, but only one can be visited by tourists. The park rangers collect the eggs every night from the laying turtles, and move them inland to a protected hatching area. The new hatchlings are released at night to avoid the daytime predators, such as birds. Both the green and the hawksbill turtles nest on the island. The night that we were there, 12 turtles nested, with over 1000 eggs collected. Our turtle laid 103. |
